Yesterday was Lunar New Year's Day, known as Seol or Seollal, and, per Lonely Planet, one of the most important traditional events of the year. The exact date changes every year, but it almost always occurs from late January to late February. Our school closed beginning Wednesday, as did most businesses, until Monday. People return to their hometowns to be with their families and honor their ancestors. These pictures were taken throughout this week at Jeonju Mart and E-Mart.
This is ginseng root, boxed and ready for New Year's gifts at the Jeonju Mart.
Candy, at Jeonju Mart, standing in front of boxes of rice cakes.
Two young women, in traditional hanboks, at E-Mart, in front of more boxes of goodies for the new year. These gift boxes are full of tooth paste, hand lotions, etc.
