Modesty is the Best Policy

I have to say that modesty is probably the best policy, but I have to share a really positive event in my life. If there had been a headline in the newspaper, it would have gone something like this:

"Girl Comes in 3rd in Football Pool"

For the second year in a row, I participated in the office football pool at Aztec Engineering in Phoenix. Initially, I decided against "going for it", as I had always relied on commentators, watching the games, and reading the newspapers to get a "feel" for my weekly picks, and of course, I wouldn't have the exposure here as I would in the States. But, in the end, I signed up.

I sort of held my own in the beginning, never winning, but still ended up in respectable numbers as the weeks went on. Because the system this year was computerized, we could track ourselves and each other, as each week unfolded. And best of all, the system allowed us to see where we stood overall.

To make a long story short, while I won 170 games, (others won far more) I was still "in the money" at the end of all 17(!) weeks due to my total point score of 1549. Those points were good enough to let me finish in 3rd place and win $120.

Probably the most significant event of the pool was the fact that my friend, Dan, won 2 single weeks in a row, which had never been done. I came close to winning a couple of weeks, but it wasn't in the cards.

Anyway, pretty good for a girl.
